[Restaurant Review] Amò - Comfortable dining spot for Italian food
Hong Kong Street is home to many good restaurants, not least Willow, with a Michelin Star. Amò serves good Italian food, but should you dine here though?
DINING
As the headline act of the ilLido Group, Amò has a large menu full of Italian classics and innovative twists. For a casual dining concept, prices are definitely steep for what you get.
Seating and Setup
Similar to its sister restaurant, Sospiri, Amò offers two different seating formats. I think most customers will prefer dining in the restaurant, but if you love the outdoors, they do have a small courtyard dining space.
The Food
They have an extensive menu, but I came as a pair, so I recommend coming in a larger group if you want to try more items from their menu.
The Truffle (pizza) is a crowd favourite, and I can understand why. Made with natural leaven, semolina, and extra virgin olive oil, the pizzas are baked for around four minutes in a wood-fired oven, and the end result is that you get a well-cooked and simply delicious pizza. The crust is light and airy, and slightly chewy. Even though I only had it after a while, the pizza crust was still warm and fluffy, and wasn't tough.
I like the truffle mascarpone, but some people may find it too rich, and overpowering the truffle flavour.

Next came the Whole Boston Lobster, Purple Artichokes and Prosecco Sauce. The lobster was well-cooked, and not rubbery, so props to the chef for that. I enjoyed the sauce alot, so much so that I dipped my pizza crust in the sauce. The artichokes were really good too; I never had artichokes that tasted like those I had in this dish. The artichokes here were juicy??? I enjoyed this dish.

I wish I had better things to say about the Chocolate Tart with Green Tea Chantilly Cream. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't bad. There's just nothing exciting about this dessert.
I guess what's exciting here is that the cream tasted of Yuzu, even though it wasn't mentioned on the menu. For the price of $18, I had much higher expectations for this.

Conclusion
Would I recommend Amò? The honest answer is I don't know. There are hits and misses with the dishes I had but I think the two biggest miss are: 1. Consistency, and 2. Concept.
Yes, the pizza I had was great. However, I also read reviews on google with pictures of pizza that were slightly burnt, and the reviewers didn't enjoy it. Given that Amò is positioned as a casual dining concept, selling a whole lobster at $68 is fair, but how many customers would actually order it? I think most customers will be here for the pastas, pizzas, or dishes that can be shared.
Amò is definitely good for enjoying Italian food in a comfortable setting, but the menu and food need work.
