[Restaurant Review] AN Omakase - Affordable and Comfortable
Affordable omakase? Fresh ingredients, a warm atmosphere, and smart pricing makes AN Omakase an easy sell. Check out this review!
DINING
Speak to a local about gentrification and they will immediately highlight Tiong Bahru, but I would argue that Keong Saik has undergone significant gentrification too (hard not to, when you have the Pinnacle@Duxton just 2 streets away from you). Keong Saik is now home to Michelin recommended restaurants, a Coach cafe, and many more funky, high-end restaurants.
AN Omakase is situated in Keong Saik, and while AN Omakase certainly has premium offerings, their lunch omakase actually starts from $48++. If that is not affordable omakase, I don't know what is.
I was there to try the Shuki Omakase at $138++, which I thought was value for money.
The Food
The appetisers were tasty and helped to awaken my palate. The combination of boiled seafood, and seafood worked well, with the seafood providing light umami, and the seaweed providing a tinge of sourness to keep my mouth wanting more.

The Ikura and Tuna Belly Chawanmushi was fantastic. Fatty tuna, coupled with the bursts of umami from the ikura, and the soft, custardy texture of the chawanmushi makes this a great dish.

The chutoro and hamachi were fresh, thickly cut, and I think that's the greatest compliment I can give to sashimi.

The hot dish of the day was grilled salmon served with a side of vegetables. This was simple but good.

I love the variety of nigiri. AN Omakase pays alot of detail to the ingredients and preparation; the rice was well-seasoned with high grade red vinegar, which gives the rice a sweet and tangy taste. This works well with the nigiri as it provides a strong flavour contrast to the freshness of the seafood.
My favourite was probably the uni handroll. The rich, and smooth uni, crispy, and fragrant seaweed, and the tangy, soft rice created a marvelous symphony of flavours and texture that left me wanting more.

For the chopped tuna belly handroll, while I like the cigar-shaped presentation, but the ratio of tuna belly, rice, and seaweed felt off. This was the least satisfying dish of the meal.

I don't have much to say about the miso soup, but I like how it provided a warm, and comforting end to the mains.

The desserts were good, but nothing mind blowing. I do appreciate the chef in entertaining me throughout the meal, and using a torch to light a candle XD

Conclusion
AN Omakase is a great choice for those who are looking to indulge in high quality omakase. Prices here start from an affordable $48++ (the $48++ menu looks great), but if you want more courses, or more premium dishes, that will just set you back more. I really enjoyed the dining experience, and how the chef made me felt welcomed.
