[Trip Planning] South Pacific Adventure: Avoiding Krisflyer Devaluation

Taking advantage of a sweet spot before devaluation

The most recent Krisflyer Devaluation raised business class award prices by an average of about 5%. That's not a lot by any means, but it made sense to lock in some sweet spots.

A Sweet Spot

One of the sweet spots on the Krisflyer award chart has to be Zone 9; for flights to Australia, and New Zealand.

For 68500 miles and SGD 114.90 in taxes, one can enjoy a nearly 10 hour business class flight from Singapore to Auckland; that's just great value.

Why was it a good deal?

Loyal Krisflyer members would know that the Singapore-Auckland route is extremely competitive, and I'm blessed to be able to book two business saver awards.

The redemption was also a good deal as I'm paying just 13.11 Krisflyer miles for each mile flown (the same exact flight will cost 13.78 Krisflyer miles for each mile flown post-devaluation). Across all possible business saver redemptions, the average cost per mile is actually 20.9 Krisflyer miles, so paying less than average at 13.11 Krisflyer miles makes the redemption a great deal.

If one were to redeem the same route but via Cathay Pacific instead, one would have to pay 88000 miles and HKD 1628; with the extra cost due to the transit at Hong Kong. Similarly, other frequent flyer programs such as Avios or Flying Blue are also charging more for a similar flight in business to Australia and New Zealand. Hence, there's no doubt that Krisflyer has the lowest award redemption cost for this route.

What's next?

I will be planning my itinerary. It has been more than a decade since I've been to New Zealand, so I'm really looking forward to it. I will also travel to Melbourne in Australia, so if you have any suggestions for me, please leave them in the comments section below!
