TRAVELFLYING BLUE

I'm a fan of Flying Blue, and if you have not read my previous post, please read it. I will now share some lesser-known features of Flying Blue.

The Secret Award Calendar

The easiest way to search for award redemptions is to find it via the Secret Award Calendar (below). The award calendar tells you the lowest award price of each month, view the redemption prices of each day of the month, and you can toggle quickly between months.

As you can see in the calendar above, there's a wealth of information being shown. The calendar tells us that the cheapest business class redemption from Singapore to London for the month of April 2025 starts from 268000 miles, but the same redemption only starts from 70000 miles on the month of January 2025. Not just that, the calendar also tells us that there are several days where we can get the same flight for 77000 miles on the month of July 2025.

You can get to the calendar using a simple trick. Instead of searching for the date that you would like to book, search for the furthest date out possible, that's 31 August 2025 from the calendar available to me (below).

After clicking search, that should bring you to the award calendar shown above.

Flying Blue Family

Flying Blue Family is a feature that allows family members to pool the miles earned. All family members must have a Flying Blue account and one family member must be appointed as the 'Flying Blue Family leader'. The 'Flying Blue Family leader' will have the ability to transfer the miles earned to his or her account.

Pooling the miles earned makes it easier to accumulate sufficient miles to make an award redemption. Using a hypothetical scenario, let's say there's a couple, the female has 80000 miles in her account, and her boyfriend has 60000 miles in his account. Without a feature to pool the miles, only the female has sufficient miles to take advantage of the award sweet spot and make a business class redemption to Europe for 70000 miles. Using the feature to pool the miles, will mean that either one of them can transfer their miles to the partner, creating a pool of 140000 miles, enough to redeem 2 Business class tickets to Europe.

It is very easy to add a family member. Login to your account and navigate to your profile page. Click on 'Flying Blue Family', as shown below, before clicking on 'Add a Flying Blue member'. You do not need to submit any documents to show that this person is a family member of yours.

On the same screen, you will be asked to enter the name of the member, and their Flying Blue member number. Once all details are filled, click 'Send invite'. An invite will be sent, and the family member only has to login and accept the invite.

Conclusion

There is so much to love about Flying Blue. Not many FFPs allow you to pool miles, so it is great that Flying Blue allows you to, and the Secret Award Calendar just makes award searching so much easier.

If you are not interested in Flying Blue after reading all of the above, then maybe travel hacking isn't your thing :P
