Naples is the third largest city of Italy, and while it may not be as well known as the bigger cities in the North such as Rome or Milan, Naples has an equally rich history.

You may have heard bad things about Naples, but please, don't avoid the city. Let me recommend you some places that you should visit if you are in Naples :)

Procida

Procida is one of the many islands off Naples. You can get there for around 10 euros one way via the many ferries available.

Procida is a small island, measuring just slightly more than 4 square kilometres, making it ideal for a day trip (or even a half-day trip). Be sure to head to Panoramica sulla Corricella to get the best view of Marina di Corricella.

Grab a serving of fried squid at Hook before leaving the island. You will enjoy it :)

Castel Sant'Elmo

Castel Sant'Elmo is a medieval fortress overlooking Naples. If for some reason, you are not interested in visiting the fortress, you should still make a visit to Belvedere San Martino, which provides the best viewpoint to see all of Naples.

You can hike or walk up to the fortress, but if you can't do the hike or don't fancy it, you can take the furnicular to Morghen station. You will then find Castel Sant'Elmo and Belvedere San Martino less than ten minutes away from Morghen station.

Pompeii

Pompeii is a vast archaeological park south of Naples. Yes, I know some may prefer the Herculaneum but you should not miss Pompeii.

Pompeii was once a thriving Roman city, but was buried under meters of ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The rediscovery of Pompeii in the 1700s has thus provided us with an opportunity to visit this grand city frozen in time.

Pompeii is huge; it probably takes 3 days to cover every inch of this ancient city. Most people won't have 3 days to spare but you should spend at least half a day here to immerse yourself in the history of this place.

You can visit Pompeii from Naples by hopping on the Circumvesuviana train line from Napoli Centrale Station.

Conclusion

There's plenty to see in Naples, but these are the attractions that I think you should not miss while you are there. Wander along the Spaccanapoli, or visit the many churches and museums that Naples has to offer. Don't leave without getting a pizza but if you are somehow bored of pizza, try out Pull O'Vèr for some great rotisserie chicken.

Despite the reputation, Naples is generally safe for tourists as long as you keep your guard up.

Naples is a gem and I will not hesitate to visit the city again.
